Pookie Hudson's Spaniels
The Spaniels formed 1952 in Gary, Indiana, are universally recognized as one of the great R&B
vocal groups of the fifties era. In 1953 "Baby It's You made the R&B Top 10. The following year the
Spaniels had their biggest hit "Goodnite Sweetheart, Goodnite" that reached US Pop top 30. The
Spaniels in 1955 recorded two regional hit "Let's Make Up," and "You Painted Pictures. The
Spaniels remain the symbol of Doo-Wop and are original artists of rock n' roll. The Spaniels
continue to tour and perform. Although Pookie was dealing with his bout of Thymus Cancer, in
2006, the group recorded a Gospel Christmas CD entitled "An Uncloudy Christmas" with various
artists. This would be the last recording done by Pookie Hudson and His Spaniels before his
passing on January 16, 2007. It was on one afternoon, while Bay Robinson and Steven Wade
visited Pookie’s home where he laid in his sick bed, which he expressed if anything were to
happen to him, he would like for the group to carry on in his name. Having approximately 10 years
on the road with such a great legend, Pookie Hudson’s Spaniels were put through the ambiguous
task of trying to find another lead singer. James Ivy, who was not a stranger to the group members,
accepted the role. Now these guys, having the task of coming up with a new group name, decided
to call themselves Pookie Hudson’s Spaniels in honor of the great Thorton James (Pookie) Hudson.
